The Outlook for Oil - A Guide for Strategic Planning 2017 (Long-Term Global Oil Outlook)

The Outlook for Oil - A Guide for Strategic Planning (our annual Long-Term Global Oil Market Outlook) is FGE’s core analytical block for its perspectives on future developments in oil demand, supply and prices to 2040. The methodology continues to be based around an internally consistent, bottom-up forecast of regional demand by product and sector, crude oil production by country, and an interaction with oil prices through to 2040.

FGE’s annual report identifies the key sensitivities and risk factors inherent in the long term outlook for global oil markets and allows clients to engage with the consultants in discussing and exploring the key emerging issues.

As such, this study consists of FGE’s detailed:

  • OPEC/non-OPEC production outlook and analysis;
  • Regional and global electric vehicle (EV) outlook and implications for gasoline/diesel demand;
  • Crude oil production costs by region and resource type;
  • Detailed demand outlook by 7 products, 9 end-sectors and 8 regions;
  • Resulting oil market balance and price forecast.

Key Areas of Coverage

On the Supply Side We Will Provide:
  • a global upstream production cost review including a detailed review of tight oil plays and their role in long-term global oil production;
  • a detailed assessment of production costs in other key areas including Canada’s oil sands, the US Gulf of Mexico, China and Russia;
  • further focus on the impact of new greenfield opportunities in the Atlantic Basin;
  • insight on the potential impact of undiscovered barrels in North West Europe.
On the Demand Side We Will Provide:
  • key drivers of demand growth, such as economic, population and energy efficiency assumptions;
  • the role of climate change policies in shaping future oil consumption;
  • a breakdown of oil demand into products and end-sectors, including:
    • road transport sector outlook based on our in-depth analysis of fuel efficiency, regional vehicle ownership and alternative vehicles outlook, resulting changes in demand for the existing fuels, potential shifts between gasoline and diesel;
    • air transport and bunker sector outlook including sector-specific issues such as the 0.5% fuel oil regulation from 2020 in the marine bunker sector and how it would affect demand for different products;
    • petrochemical sector feedstock outlook based on regional cracker capacity increases and plastic consumption.
